Priscilla Martinez, Cub Scout Den Leader for Pack 1576 and Troop Committee Chairwoman for Troop 786 of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Scouting Program, has a family of Scouts in Venturing, Boy Scouts, and Cub Scouts. She and her family along with many other Scouts in the Northern Virginia Community she lives in, participated in many programs during Ramadan.

Their kids sell Girl Scout cookies, their parents volunteer in the community, and their families celebrate the Fourth of July. Like most Americans, Muslims are trying to live a "normal" life. But in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, the Islamic community in the US has been subjected to hateful insults and stereotypes they are still working to overcome. Scouts participate in an Iftar dinner in Northern Virginia

Sterling, Virginia (CNN)–Mohammad Azraf Ullah, 17 years old of Herndon, Virginia, has been observing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan since he was a young boy. Believed to purify the body and soul, the food and water fast from dusk until dawn for 30 days is part of the five tenants of Islam.

"Patience is one of the biggest things I've learned" said Ullah. "It reminds me how great God is, and you really have to be grateful to him for everything he gave you."

Such patience and reverence should help Ullah meet the requirements for his Eagle Scout badge, which he's set to earn in the coming months. The high school senior and Boy Scout participated in the annual Iftar dinner - or "breaking of the fast" meal - hosted by the All Dulles Area Muslim Society Scout program on Saturday night.

The secret behind Jared Johnson's race car? He has a tiny Lego glued to the rear of its 5-ounce chasis."It's very stealthy," the 9-year-old Fairfax resident said of the vehicle that took him almost four days to build from a small block of wood. "I think it'll be the fastest of everybody here today," he added shortly before the start of Sunday's race.

While Johnson finds miniature car racing fun for its own sake, "I'd also like to get my first trophy," he confided.Even though Johnson did not come in first, the race itself - the Interfaith Pinewood Derby - was a precedent-setting event in the Washington area, bringing together Jewish and Muslim Cub Scouts to compete and build friendships in an updated version of this traditional scouting exercise. It was hosted by Cub Scout Pack 1818 of Congregation Olam Tikvah in Fairfax, which teamed up with its counterpart packs from the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Cub Scouts. Olam Tikvah provided the space, refreshments and volunteers. ADAMS brought its 42-foot metal racing track and timing software as well as volunteers.
